Located on Wiradjuri Country at the western edge of the Blue Mountains, Lithgow is a city with strong industrial roots. Lithgow City Council and the NSW Government commissioned the Lithgow Emerging Economy Plan (LEEP), to help Lithgow plan a successful energy transition with a diverse economy and new job opportunities.
LEEP is designed to reinvent and reinvigorate Lithgow’s economy – by building on its innovative industrial heritage, regional strengths, and natural assets.
Just two hours from Sydney, Lithgow offers a blend of natural beauty and heritage charm – from the stunning Seven Valleys and Blue Mountains, historic buildings to creative hubs and emerging industries that showcase the region’s transformation.
Getting to Lithgow
By air
Fly into Sydney (SYD) for the most frequent options; Bathurst (BHS) is the nearest regional airport. Car hire available at both locations. Bathurst is approximately a 45 minute drive east to Lithgow.
By car
Approx. 2 hours (150 km) west of Sydney via the Great Western Highway. There are plenty of car hire options available from the Sydney Airport.
By train
Direct NSW TrainLink services (see Main Western Line or Blue Mountain Line) operate daily from Sydney Central → Lithgow – a comfortable, sensationally scenic run across the Blue Mountains. The trip takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. Tickets approximately $22.
Car Hire options in Lithgow

Things to do whilst in The Seven Valleys
Step into a magical disused railway tunnel illuminated by thousands of bioluminescent glow worms. Located within Wollemi National Park, it’s a short, scenic walk that offers an unforgettable natural light show.

Built in the 1840s, Eskbank House is one of Lithgow’s oldest buildings and a window into the town’s early colonial and industrial past. Its collection of artefacts, art, and historic machinery tells the story of Lithgow’s growth.
Perched high above Lithgow, this lookout delivers breathtaking panoramic views across the Blue Mountains and Hartley Valley. It’s one of the region’s best spots for sunrise, sunset, and photography.

Lost City lookout is the gateway to Lost City walking track in The Seven Valleys. It’s a scenic spot for a picnic with views of unique ‘platy’ pagoda rock formations and the sandstone escarpment as a backdrop.
It’s on the way to the Glow Worm Tunnel and is a key feature of the Gardens of Stone State Conservation Area.
Surrounded by the wonders of World Heritage Listed wilderness, the Capertee Valley is the world’s second largest canyon – 1km wider than the USA’s Grand Canyon, though not quite as deep.
