Chair, Murchison GeoRegion and pre Aspiring UNESCO Global Geopark - Project Working Group

Cr Karen Morrissey

Karen is passionate about the Murchison Region in Western Australia, where she has lived on Meeline Station and in Mount Magnet for four decades. Through her role as Shire Councilor and working in tourism, she has advocated for and supported formation of the Murchison GeoRegion and pre Aspiring Geopark and is currently Chair of the Project Working Group involving seven Murchison Shires. She has been involved in astrotourism since 1986. In 2013, Karen initiated, then co-ordinated the annual Astro Rocks Fest for the Shire of Mount Magnet.

Travelling through twenty countries to view geosites, aspiring geopark and UNESCO sites such as ‘Petra’ in Jordan, ‘Head Smashed in Buffalo Jump’ and ‘Dinosaur Provincial Park’ in Canada, has confirmed to Karen that Geotourism can make a significant contribution to regional development in remote areas. She believes that sites in the Murchison GeoRegion could be recognized as a geopark by international bodies like UNESCO.

In 2002, Karen was invested with an Order of Australia Medal for service to the community and recording local history. She was Australian 2020 Summit delegate, in the working group representing Rural Australia, is a Western Australian Parks Ambassador and a representative on the State Geotourism Development Committee.
